Most dryer malfunction is caused by lint buildup or inadequate ventilation, and when service personnel can't find a problem with the machine, it is definitely a vent problem that we can solve. It has been YEARS since I used a service to clean my home. In the past I've always used one of those types that send in a crew and they very quickly go through the house and are gone in 30 to 45 minutes. They always did a "good job" but not a "great job". The two ladies that came from Jessie's did a GREAT JOB and spent two full hours working constantly. I will call them again for sure!
You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.
If moisture is present in your air conditioning system, there is greater potential for growth of mold and the subsequent release of spores, which can cause allergic reactions and other symptoms. That’s why it’s so important to have your ducts cleaned properly by professionals. Overlooking a component in a contaminated system can result in recontamination and the return of air quality problems.
Anyone who has ever seen the amount of lint that can come out of a dryer venting system during a professional cleaning would not hesitate for even a second to schedule an annual dryer vent cleaning. Dryer lint build-up is one of the most common causes of house fires, but because the dryer vent is hidden from view, it is too easy to put out of mind. However, there can be an immense amount of lint jammed inside your dryer’s venting pipe. A highly-combustible material, lint can become a very real fire hazard. The chimney professionals at Hudson Chimney have also seen blockages in dryer exhaust vents from nests of small animals and insects and damages to the venting system or an improper connection. A compromised vent will not exhaust properly to the outside. Accumulated lint can lead to reduced airflow and this can cause overheating which could easily start a fire. Most people assume that their dryer’s lint trap does a good enough job when it comes to catching lint, and while it generally does, “good enough” has not been enough for some. U.S. fire departments report an estimated 2,900 clothes dryer fires in residential buildings each year, causing an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss.
There is some disagreement within the industry about the best method for cleaning air ducts.  The two schools of thought are the “negative air” approach and the rotary brush and vacuum approach.  We believe that both air duct cleaning methods can achieve great results in most situations when performed properly by competent technicians.  However, our focus has always been on high quality residential service.  The type of residential duct work commonly used in homes in the South poses unique challenges to duct cleaners because it is soft, flexible, and does not go in straight lines.  Firms using the negative air approach are especially challenged by this type of duct work, as that process was originally designed to work well on the rigid metal duct work commonly found in the North and in large commercial buildings.  The tools used to agitate the duct work in negative air cleaning are very difficult to get all the way into your duct work and can damage the lining of the ducts we find in most residences in the greater Jacksonville area.
